Steps to Stop Ransomware

1. Backup - have a copy of your work backed up offsite - cloud and home, onto systems that are used only for backups.
2. Defend - install an antivirus package. Paid antivirus packages have all features. As a minimal effective protection, use an open source antivirus software. Immunet free is as good as commercial ones, just does not spy on you.
3. Watch and be vigilant. Act as if everything is a phishing attack. 
4. For internal communications - implement Email headers analysis, authorized sender domains policy or, better yet, switch to non-email communication tools like MEGA.
5. For externally-facing Email comms, implement Email headers and attachment analysis to filter out phishing attempts.
