STOP Ransomware is cracking passwords

STOP Ransomware is able to decrypt passwords

What to do to prevent passwords from being decrypted?

  • Use long passphrases, not short passwords
  • Include special characters when possible
  • Include a space, especially on Windows computers
  • Change passwords frequently
  • Setup an encryption passphrase for your browser password storage

For example use a passphrase WeNeverGiveUpWhenWePlaySoccer20& instead of a silly common one 123456.

The ransomware called STOP was discovered with variants of the Azorult Trojan. Azorult cracks the user's passwords. Cracking is done by reading password hashes or doing a dictionary attack AKA brute force attack when a program tries to find dictionary words to guess the password.
